* * *

I was all out of breath by the time I reached the choir room, and even then I was still a full two minutes late to class.

“Hello, Miss Shin,” said Mr. Martin as I made my way to my seat. “It’s nice to see you’ve decided to join us.”

“Sorry, Mr. Martin!” I replied. “Won’t happen again.”

Throughout choir, I desperately wanted to sneak a text to my friends to tell them what happened, but Mr. Martin had a strict no phones policy. So I was just going to have to wait until art class to tell my friends. And ask Carolina how she felt about me teaching Paul math.

During class, Paul met my eyes and smiled at me, not once but twice.

What is happening? What does that mean?

Several rounds of “Do, Re, Mi” and “My Favorite Things” later, Mr. Martin spread out his arms and made a special announcement.

“Class, I’m so pleased to inform you that I’ve selected the soloists for this year’s fall concert. Our soloists are as follows: for the girls, Melinda Chiu, and for the boys, Donovan Reynolds!”

Everyone cheered. I cheered too, but I was confused. Paul had done way better than Donovan! Or so I thought, anyway.

I didn’t get a chance to talk to Paul before class was over, so I sent him a text on my way to art.

Sorry you didn’t get the solo.

Almost immediately, my phone buzzed.

It’s ok. I prob wouldn’t have had time to practice anyway. Too busy with classes and football.

Before I could chicken out, I texted him back with, I thought you were great. You have a really nice voice.

Thanks!

Not only was Paul replying to my texts right away, but he’d sent me a smiley face! I couldn’t stop grinning as I entered the art room. For once, I was the first one at our table, and it seemed like forever until Carolina and Zeina finally arrived.

Before my friends could even sit down in their seats, I blurted out, “Guess who asked me if we could tutor him?”

Carolina raised an eyebrow. “Who?”

Zeina also gave me a curious look.

“Paul Kim Wiley! He needs help with math.”

Both my friends’ jaws dropped. Zeina looked just plain shocked, while a bright smile erupted on Carolina’s face. Uh-oh…

“Wow, you actually talked to him? And he knows our club exists?” Zeina asked. “That’s so cool! I wonder if this means we’ll get more students from our grade.”

“Well, he found out because I told Caleb about the club, and Caleb told him about us.”

At the mention of his name, Caleb turned around from where he was sitting at the table next to us.

“Hey,” he said. “Someone say my name?”

“Yeah!” I replied. “Thanks for telling Paul about our club.”

“No problem. I’m doing pretty well in math right now, but I know Paul has been struggling for a while. Hope you guys can help him! It’d suck if he was pulled from the team. We really need him to do well this season.”

“He’s in good hands—”

“I’ll try my best!”

Carolina and I had spoken at the same time.
