I was all out of breath by the time I reached the choir room, and even then I was still a full two minutes late to class.
âHello, Miss Shin,â said Mr. Martin as I made my way to my seat. âItâs nice to see youâve decided to join us.â
âSorry, Mr. Martin!â I replied. âWonât happen again.â
Throughout choir, I desperately wanted to sneak a text to my friends to tell them what happened, but Mr. Martin had a strict no phones policy. So I was just going to have to wait until art class to tell my friends. And ask Carolina how she felt about me teaching Paul math.
During class, Paul met my eyes and smiled at me, not once but twice.
What is happening? What does that mean?
Several rounds of âDo, Re, Miâ and âMy Favorite Thingsâ later, Mr. Martin spread out his arms and made a special announcement.
âClass, Iâm so pleased to inform you that Iâve selected the soloists for this yearâs fall concert. Our soloists are as follows: for the girls, Melinda Chiu, and for the boys, Donovan Reynolds!â
Everyone cheered. I cheered too, but I was confused. Paul had done way better than Donovan! Or so I thought, anyway.
I didnât get a chance to talk to Paul before class was over, so I sent him a text on my way to art.
Sorry you didnât get the solo.
Almost immediately, my phone buzzed.
Itâs ok. I prob wouldnât have had time to practice anyway. Too busy with classes and football.
Before I could chicken out, I texted him back with, I thought you were great. You have a really nice voice.
Thanks!
Not only was Paul replying to my texts right away, but heâd sent me a smiley face! I couldnât stop grinning as I entered the art room. For once, I was the first one at our table, and it seemed like forever until Carolina and Zeina finally arrived.
Before my friends could even sit down in their seats, I blurted out, âGuess who asked me if we could tutor him?â
Carolina raised an eyebrow. âWho?â
Zeina also gave me a curious look.
âPaul Kim Wiley! He needs help with math.â
Both my friendsâ jaws dropped. Zeina looked just plain shocked, while a bright smile erupted on Carolinaâs face. Uh-ohâ¦
âWow, you actually talked to him? And he knows our club exists?â Zeina asked. âThatâs so cool! I wonder if this means weâll get more students from our grade.â
âWell, he found out because I told Caleb about the club, and Caleb told him about us.â
At the mention of his name, Caleb turned around from where he was sitting at the table next to us.
âHey,â he said. âSomeone say my name?â
âYeah!â I replied. âThanks for telling Paul about our club.â
âNo problem. Iâm doing pretty well in math right now, but I know Paul has been struggling for a while. Hope you guys can help him! Itâd suck if he was pulled from the team. We really need him to do well this season.â
âHeâs in good handsââ
âIâll try my best!â
Carolina and I had spoken at the same time.
